Task 2 Australia

Introduction

The Great Barrier Reef, off Australia’s North-east coast has been labeled “one of the wonders of the world” (Gillett, 1980, p. 4). What is it about this great natural legacy that draws millions to it each year, bringing almost $6 billion annually to the Australian economy (WWF, 2011)?

---------------------------

---------------------------

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest single collection of coral reefs, boasting close to 3000 individual reef systems and an abundance of marine life. It is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches where you can sit back on the white sand and relax or adventure off shore to come up close with an intricate, diverse eco-system. As one of the seven wonders of the natural world and a World Heritage Area, it is the only living thing on Earth visible from space. However, despite its beauty, the Great Barrier Reef is threatened. Pollution, overfishing, invasive species and climate change are damaging the reef, with dire consequences (Briney, A., 2010). As the chosen representatives to speak on behalf of your fellow citizens, what will you suggest to motivate us to preserve The Great Barrier Reef’s breath taking beauty?

TASK 2

You are to divide yourselves into groups of five, each taking on the role of the Fisherman, Tourism Director, Biologist, Farmer or Environmentalist. In these roles you will research how your area of expertise is negatively affecting the reef and what can be done to stop any of these effects. Once you have a solution, you must return to your fellow representatives and compile this knowledge into a proposal for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef. This proposal is to be presented orally (with supporting PowerPoint) to your fellow citizens to try and motivate them to play their part in protecting the reef.

Once you have chosen your role, you are responsible for gathering important information and solutions within that area. You are to research and answer all of the questions under your chosen heading by accessing the websites on the resources page. These websites have been provided to get you started; you have to source at least one other website yourself and provide notes on the validity of all sites.

Note: As a group decide on a table format that will help you while researching your topic. Be sure to rule up a table where you can take clear notes and say your sources as your ability to research will be graded individually.

Roles

Fisherman: Representative of the Fishing Industry:

As a fisherman, it is your task to investigate what effect fishing has on the reef and what can be done to reverse any negative effects. Answer the following:

1. Why do we need to fish on the reef?

2. What types of fishing takes place on the reef?

3. What negative impacts are reported from these types of fishing?

4. What solutions can be proposed to stop these negative impacts?

Tourism Director: Representative of the Tourism Industry:

As the Tourism Director, it is your task to investigate what effect the tourism industry has on the reef and what can be done to reverse any negative effects. Answer the following:

1. Why is the tourism industry so important to the Great Barrier Reef?

2. What types of activities are provided for tourists when visiting the reef?

3. What negative impacts are reported from these activities and the tourism industry as a whole?

4. What solutions can be proposed to help stop these negative impacts?

Biologist: Representative of the Science Industry:

As a biologist, it is your task to investigate what effect the Crown of Thorns is having on the reef and what can be done to reverse any negative effects. Answer the following:

1. What is the biology of the Crown of Thorns Starfish?

2. What causes the outbreaks of the Crown of Thorns Starfish?

3. What impacts does the Crown of Thorns Starfish have on the reef?

4. What solutions can be proposed to help stop any negative impacts?

Farmer: Representative of the Agriculture Industry:

As a farmer, it is your task to investigate what effect farming is having on the reef and what can be done to reverse any negative effects. Answer the following:

1. What aspects of farming have a negative effect on the reef?

2. How are these aspects of farming negatively affecting the reef?

3. What will happen if a solution to these problems cannot be found?

4. What solutions can be proposed to help stop the negative impacts of farming?

Environmentalist: Representative of Climate Change Board:

As the Environmentalist, it is your task to investigate what effect climate change has on the reef and what can be done to reverse any negative effects. Answer the following:

1. How does climate change affect the ocean?

2. What effect do these impacts have on the species and habitats?

3. What effect might these impacts have on the fishing and tourism industry?

4. What solutions can be proposed to help stop the negative impacts that climate change has on the reef?

Proposal and Presentation

Now you have done your research, as a group, review each other’s notes and decide what you think are the greatest negative effects each area has on the reef and at least three solutions you think we could use to better the problem. If more information is needed, research further.

From here, you are to work together as a group to compile your research into an oral presentation. An appropriate order of how information is to be communicated is to be decided upon as a group, but you must ensure answers to each role’s questions are addressed. Your group will then present the information in the form of an 8-12 minute oral presentation that seeks to motivate the listeners. Each individual needs to speak for an even amount of time and a copy of the script with correct grammatical structure and referencing (A.P.A.) needs to be submitted.

To support your proposal presentation, create an aesthetically pleasing PowerPoint that supports, not overwhelms, your information. Provide visuals that are relevant and remember that the slides should support your goal to motivate the citizens. check the Evaluation Page to understand what criteria we are asking you to meet.
